As individuals, if we cannot perceive reality and what is happening around us, we cannot transform our communities. I did not get a chance to see my reflection in the stories told until I sought them out in college. I am passionate about what is inside curriculums taught in the school system and whether my existence is mirrored. ~ Byrd |
How can I help you achieve your learning goals?
As a result of my workshop facilitation, creative consulting, and edutainment options, educators have the opportunity to amplify the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion on campus through writing and storytelling. I am looking for educators who are interested in providing stories of people of color and diversifying their curriculum. Who do you know?

What does it means to have a conversation about our existence as Black people in America?
HERstory of HIStory and inHERitance: the stories we carry are conversations where poetry meets education.
I write to encourage conversation around what it means to live in a Black body; how my existence is multi-dimensional. I demonstrate how important it is for my reflection to be the main character without apologizing. I write to unlocks the opportunity for invisible voices to be heard, to make stories accessible through imagery and rhythm. I write to expose my reflection and to illuminate all of the nuances left in the background.
HERstory of HIStorywhen black women wake up and look in the mirror we see human being we see catalyst but when we step outside the world sees another black body stumbling in a system that walked off wid alla our stuff we be used as profit in someone else’s dream we constantly gasping for air or answers whichever comes first
we see collective resilience finding purpose beyond the pain we wrap our words around our scars this is HIStory not the falsely constructed pixelated narrative welcome to HERstory renaming our worth we believe this is the reset button |

inHERitance: the stories we carryinHERitance: the stories we carry is an award-winning piece illuminating Byrd’s quest for liberation. Ever wonder why a black woman raises her voice? Dating back to 1526, it’s been a daily battle for her to love. To survive. To breathe. Her tears have ripples filled with the weight of isolation, invisibility, and a nagging feeling of missing something she didn’t know existed. Her body is forever ruminating in a wave of magic, agony, and exhaustion. This is her refuge.

HUMMINGBYRD'S SPEAK
There is something about the rhythm of the black woman that is captivating and motivating. It's like her soul moves at a tempo that is evocative and pure and healing and inHERitance was every bit of all those things. ~ Darrious Varner, playwright | actor |
HERstory of HIStory is a poignant and awe inspiring piece. Heather and Greg really speaks to the pain of minorities but also speaks of the joy and greatness that we possess. It also begs the audience to understand us and help us gain true value and franchise in this society. It is beautiful and painful at the same time...much like our existence in the United States. You must experience this! ~JM Chambers, Playwright |
